Creative Writing, MFA

  • Application Deadline
  • 24 months
, NY,
Dominican offers a unique low-residency MFA in Creative Writing, located in the vibrant community of the San Francisco Bay Area. Along with tracks in poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction, our program offers an emphasis in Narrative/Poetic Medicine—the only such MFA track in the country. Whatever your literary ambitions, our program will move your writing forward.

The act of writing itself can effect powerful change in perception and feeling—our low-residency MFA is geared towards this change. Writing may be a personal journey of discovery or may arise from a desire to change the course of our literary heritage. Renewal is central to the work of all writers and poets, whether it be forging a new poetics or delving into forbidden subject matter.

In addition to the genres of Poetry, Fiction, and Creative Non-Fiction, we offer an optional track in Narrative/Poetic Medicine. “Writing for Renewal” brings together poets and writers who seek to explore the forces of illness and recovery through the written word. A foundational belief is that being cured of the disease is not the same as being healed, and that the writing of poetry and prose brings us to a place of healing.
