Overview

The Master of Music with an Emphasis in Music Education focuses on teacher training for the private studio and the elementary and secondary school levels.  Graduate students with an Emphasis in Music Education take required courses in the Graduate Music Core (music history, music theory, scholarship, and aesthetics) and their respective area of interest in music education (applied study, elementary and secondary music education methods, and literature).  In addition, they complete a final project in music education.  Prospective graduate students must audition (performance or teaching demonstration) for admission and complete diagnostic examinations-they need not take the Graduate Record Exam. The Master of Music with an Emphasis in Performance develops specific music skills and abilities to a high degree in the fields of instrumental, keyboard, and vocal performance and conducting.  Graduate students with an Emphasis in Performance take required courses in the Graduate Music Core (music history, music theory, scholarship, and aesthetics) and their respective performance area (applied study, pedagogy, and literature). In addition, they perform or conduct two recitals.  Prospective graduate students must audition (performance or teaching demonstration) for admission and complete diagnostic examinations-they need not take the Graduate Record Exam.
