The Department of Elementary and Early Childhood Education prepares inquiring and reflective educators to teach in diverse settings from preschool through grade eight in the public schools of New Jersey.

Overview

Undergraduate and graduate programs are offered to students who are pursuing elementary/early childhood education as a profession and to certified teachers who want to enhance their professional development and practice through graduate study.  

The MAT K-6 is a 15 month, 33-credit full time program which results in New Jersey Certification in Elementary Education K-6 as well as a Master of Arts in Teaching Degree.* Teacher candidates participate in a year-long residency (3-4 days per week) in a public elementary school.

General requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree with either a major in a liberal arts or science or with a minimum of 60 credits of liberal arts.
  • Cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale.
  • Passing score on PRAXIS Core exam in reading, writing, and math
  • Passing score on PRAXIS II content exam in Mathematics: Content Knowledge
  • Two letter of recommendation from educational, professional or business sources
  • An Essay describing applicant's reason for wishing to complete the program
  • An Interview with Program Director, Dr. Julie Rosenthal
