Overview
- Actively engage in field and laboratory research, which is the primary focus of the graduate program in biology.
- Learn and explore in the program’s outstanding facilities with state-of-the-art equipment, including, molecular biology laboratories, environmental chambers, animal rooms, herbarium/museum and GIS and landscape ecology laboratories. The department also hosts the Ophidian Research Colony that houses several species of snakes used for laboratory studies.
Graduates of the Biology program of The University of Texas at Tyler are employed in private industry, local, state and federal governments and environmental consulting.

- Develop your research emphasis in any of these areas of study: evolution, genetics, cell biology, molecular biology, ecology, behavior, systematic and biogeography.
- Study a diversity of organisms: insects, snakes, turtles, tortoises, mussels, plants, fungi, bacteria, viruses.
- Benefit from one-on-one faculty attention and assistance with your research from your professors as you learn in small classes averaging less than 10 students.
- Conduct research in aquatic and terrestrial field sites located throughout the beautiful park-like setting of the UT Tyler campus as well as several field sites within driving distance.
- Choose to become a teaching assistant to gain valuable hands-on experience leading laboratory exercises for undergraduates.
- Join the Biology Club, which offers networking opportunities and social activities among UT Tyler biology graduate students.

General requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in science with a major in biology or a closely related field from an accredited college or university with a minimum grade point average of 3.0/4.0 or equivalent.
- A satisfactory score on the General Test (verbal, quantitative, and analytical) of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Students who do not have satisfactory scores on the GRE may be admitted under the condition that they obtain a grade of "B" or higher on a prescribed set of undergraduate and/or graduate courses that are approved by the department.
- A satisfactory grade point average on all prior advanced (junior, senior and graduate) work taken.
- A satisfactory score on TOEFL or an equivalent test for applicants whose native language is not English.
