About

The Psychology Department in the School of Arts & Science at Iona College offers the Master of Arts (MA) degree in School Psychology. This program is conditionally accredited by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP; Specialist Level).

Overview

The MA, School Psychology at Iona College is a 64-credit program designed to prepare students to function as school psychologists with a high level of professional competence and integrity. School psychologists are professionals trained to provide a variety of services, including but not limited to, psychological assessment, intervention, prevention, and program development and evaluation to learners of all ages.  School psychologists specialize in the developmental processes of children and youth within the context of the school system. The program includes a solid foundation in the fundamentals of psychology as well as specialization courses geared to providing students with the necessary skills to function as competent school psychologists. In addition to course work, students engage in a variety of fieldwork including a practicum experience designed to familiarize students with the role of the school psychologist and to give students an opportunity to develop and improve skills in the areas of assessment, counseling, and consultation. An internship experience, which provides students with the opportunity to practice and improve skills acquired throughout their graduate training, is completed in the final year of training. Students completing this program are eligible for certification as school psychologists by the New York State Department of Education.

Internship Activities

Each student is required to complete an internship experience in their final year of training. Students complete a minimum of 1200 hours, 600 of which must be in a school setting. Internship supervisors in the school setting must be certified school psychologists and supervisors for all other settings must be licensed psychologists. Internships are to be completed on a full time basis over the course of one year (September – June following the school calendar). Should extenuating circumstances arise students may complete the internship part time over two years with departmental permission. Students must be enrolled and attend the internship seminars (PSY 667 and PSY 668) during each semester that they are in internship placement. A student may not begin internship without first successfully completing practicum and without the approval of the department.

The internship is designed to provide students with the opportunity to apply their knowledge, to develop skills needed for effective service delivery, and to integrate competencies that address the goals of the Iona College training program.  Students are expected to be able to create effective learning environments that will benefit the populations they serve.
