The Social Work program of Andrews University prepares students for generalist social work practice in a variety of settings with multiple population groups. Though not required, students may choose to specialize in marriage and family, mental health, school social work, international social work, social work and child welfare, human services management or Christian ministry.

Overview

The foundation curriculum for the MSW consists of 9 core competencies that are required for every accredited MSW program: 

  • Demonstrate ethical and professional behavior; 
  • Engage diversity and difference in practice; 
  • Advance human rights and social, economic, and environmental justice; 
  • Engage in practice-informed research and research-informed practice; 
  • Engage in policy practice; 
  • Engage with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities; 
  • Assess and plan with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities; 
  • Intervene with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities;
  • Evaluate practice with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities. 

In addition, the Social Work program of Andrews University has added an additional competency: demonstrate a Christian social work perspective. The curriculum is designed to teach students the knowledge, values and skills, along with understanding of the cognitive and affective reactions and judgement that accompany these dimensions.

General requirements

  • A bachelors degree (or non-U.S. equivalent) from an accredited institution and a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75 for the two-year regular standing, and 3.0 for one-year advanced standing program (applicants with lower GPA may be admitted upon consideration of the composite profile).
  • Two Recommendations from professionals such as advisors, major professors and employers.
  • Resume describing employment, research or special projects.
  • Essay or Statement of Purpose reflecting your philosophical perspective, personal, professional and academic goals, and reasons for seeking the graduate program.
  • TOEFL, IELTS or PTE (academic): Students whose language of education is not English must submit English proficiency test scores.
