Overview
Both Chemistry program tracks at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley require students to finish 12-credit hours of core courses, 3-credit hours of seminar courses, and 9-credit hours of elective courses.
Key Features
- In order to meet the total 30-credit hour requirement for graduation, students in the traditional research track need to complete 6-credit hours on thesis and chemical research, while those in the teacher preparation track should finish 6-credit hours on chemical educational project on secondary school/community college education.
- Among the 9-credit elective hours, students may be allowed to bring in a maximum of 6-credit graduate hours from courses other than Chemistry.

General requirements
- Undergraduate degree with a major in Chemistry or 32 hours of undergraduate courses in Chemistry.
- Undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0.
- Official transcripts from each institution attended (must be submitted directly to UTRGV).
- Two letters of recommendation from professional or academic sources.
- Statement of Interest explaining objectives in pursuing the degree and area of interest within chemistry or in biochemistry or material science.
- GRE General Test. GRE test scores are valid for 5 years. A waiver of the GRE requirement will be granted to applicants who show proof of completing a graduate degree (master’s or doctoral).
