The M.A. in History at Florida Gulf Coast University offers students a well-rounded and flexible academic program, emphasizing the research, writing, and professional development skills needed to succeed in teaching, public history (museum administration, archives, government offices, etc), and PhD programs in History or related fields.


The History program offered by Florida Gulf Coast University involves a comprehensive view of the past that enables students to better understand a range of complex historical events, issues and debates in a global context. 

The M.A. degree offers three fields of study: U.S. History, State, Local & Public History and World History.


The program prepares students for positions as educators, researchers, communicators and community advocates as well as for doctoral programs in history and related subjects. 

Graduates with M.A. in History from Florida Gulf Coast University will be able to:

  • Evaluate and deconstruct a range of historical texts.
  • Conduct advanced historical research and scholarship, using relevant resources and databases that will foster continuing enquiry.
  • Engage in historical research and apply that research in writing.
  • Analyze and evaluate historical texts, including primary and secondary sources, in a complex manner.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of historical theories and philosophies through their own writing and research.
  • Analyze various ethical and professional issues that emanate from historical scholarship.
  • Use the intellectual tools necessary for leadership and participation in global civic culture.
