About

A M.F.A. in creative writing prepares students who have decided to develop their particular literary skills to a higher level. 

Overview

By working closely with the well-published poets and writers in the Department of English, as well as with their fellow graduate students, the developing creative writers actively participate in a scholarly community that focuses on successfully learning the craft of writing. Upon completion of the degree, the successful student will have a completed manuscript ready for publication.

Scope of the Program - The College of Liberal Arts offers a broad and comprehensive course of study including most areas of knowledge in the humanities, the fine and performing arts, mathematics, and the biological, physical, and social sciences.

Founded in 1848 with four professors, the College of Liberal Arts is the oldest and largest division of the university. Students seeking a general education may acquire intellectual and civic competence; lay the broad foundation needed for specialized training in law, medicine, theology, and other professional fields; and prepare themselves for advanced study, research, and teaching in the humanities, fine arts, mathematics, and sciences.

TOEFL admission requirements TOEFL® IBT The TOEFL iBT® is given online through the internet at designated testing site. The test measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. The score refers to the total score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading), each subject has a range of 0 - 30.

Other requirements

General requirements

  • A completed paper or online application form. Applicants must note on their applications whether they are electing full-time or part-time status.
  • An official score from a standardized test: GMAT for programs in the School of Accountancy, GMAT or GRE for the School of Business Administration, and GRE (verbal and quantitative sections) for most other programs. Other materials may be required by specific departments.
  • Official transcripts from the institution conferring the baccalaureate degree and from all colleges and universities subsequently attended. Only transcripts mailed directly from the sending institution to the Graduate School are considered official.

Funding

The University of Mississippi has many scholarships that have been made available through the generous donations of alumni and friends of the university.  If you wish to be considered for scholarships, you must file a University of Mississippi Admission Application, and submit an online Special Programs & Scholarships Application . This application should be completed for the priority deadline of January 5th with a final deadline of February 15. Some scholarships may require separate applications, such as, Honor’s, Croft, School of Business, School of Engineering, and Pharmacy.

Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be considered for any need-based awards.
