Overview
The Applied Mathematics program at University of California, Merced is led by a tight-knit group of young and energetic faculty. We have developed a truly unique learning environment, focused on a deep knowledge of the principles of applied and computational mathematics along with a broad understanding of how to apply those principles for understanding our world. We are enthusiastically committed to training both undergraduate and graduate students in research and education.
Learning Outcomes
Upon graduating, we expect students completing the MS I (with a thesis) degree in Applied Mathematics to be able to:
- Solve advanced mathematical problems using analytical methods.
- Solve advanced mathematical problems using computational methods.
- Give clear and organized written and verbal explanations of mathematical ideas to a variety of audiences including teaching undergraduate students.
- Model real-world problems mathematically and analyze those models using their mastery of the core concepts.
- Recognize ethical and responsible conduct and learn how to apply them to research.
- Make an original contribution to the knowledge in a chosen research subfield of Applied Mathematics.

General requirements
- Hold a baccalaureate degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution with a major appropriate to the proposed graduate program. This degree must represent the completion of a program equivalent both in the distribution of academic subject matter and scholarship achievement comparable to that offered at the University of California.
- Have a satisfactory scholastic average, usually a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B) is required.
