The Master of Arts in Political Science at Miami University is designed to equip students with the analytical skills and substantive knowledge necessary for engaging in applied politics, public affairs, and public policy study. 


Students in Political Science at Miami University are exposed to the discipline of political science, specifically focusing on how political science theories underpin the systematic study of the behavior of political actors and processes in the American context and globally. 

Special emphasis is placed on developing the student’s understanding of the frameworks for active participation in governance, issue advocacy, law and legal affairs, and public policy research, while developing the research, analytical and writing skills essential for public leaders.


The Master of Arts in Political Science is a terminal degree for students intending to pursue careers in politics at all levels of government and in nongovernmental organizations.

GRE admission requirements GRE® The GRE® General Test is a widely administered admissions test that measures the skills needed in today's graduate and business school programs worldwide. It contains three sections - Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Three scores are reported: a Verbal Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, a Quantitative Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, and an Analytical Writing score on a 0 - 6 score scale in half-point increments.

English requirements

TOEFL admission requirements TOEFL® IBT The TOEFL iBT® is given online through the internet at designated testing site. The test measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. The score refers to the total score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading), each subject has a range of 0 - 30.
IELTS admission requirements IELTS The International English Language Test System (IELTS) tests your English-language proficiency on a scale of 1 – 9. The score refers to the combined average score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading).

General requirements

  • At least 18 semester hours of undergraduate work in political science or at least 12 semester hours in political science and 12 in other social sciences, including a survey course in the American political system or introduction to political science;
  • At least a 3.00 (4.00 scale) grade point average (GPA) in the above undergraduate course work;
  • Three letters of recommendation;
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general test scores;
  • A letter or statement describing career objective and fields of interest in political science.
  • A writing sample.
