General requirements

Applicants should submit a portfolio of work in their preferred creative genre (poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction).

The writing sample should consist of: a two-page statement of purpose addressing the applicant's reasons for applying to the program and approximately 15 pages of poetry or 20 pages of prose (fiction or creative nonfiction).

Applicants should have completed an undergraduate bachelor's degree, with (in most cases) at least a minor in English.

Ordinarily, a 3.0 standing GPA should have been achieved in upper-division English courses at the undergraduate level.

Applicants must achieve satisfactory scores on the GRE exam
