The TESOL/Modern Languages program delivered by the University of Northern Iowa gives students the opportunity to be part of a vibrant intellectual and creative community – one that focuses on connecting them with new cultures, new knowledge and new ideas.

Through impactful experiences inside and outside the classroom, along with collaborative community partnerships, you’ll broaden your horizons and hone your professional skills.Students in our department gain translating, writing and publishing experiences, which can be complemented by study abroad opportunities. These experiences, along with the skills gained through them, carry our students to successful careers in education, publishing, business, politics, media and beyond.Cultivate a deeper understanding of yourself and others through critical and creative interaction with languages, literatures, and cultures.

Programme Structure

Students with TESOL credentials work in the public schools across the state and have pursued advanced degrees in linguistics, education and other fields.

Students who have received undergraduate degrees from different departments at UNI often inquire about going on to get an M.A. in TESOL because it can complement their undergraduate study in a variety of useful ways.

TESOL students with teaching credentials are highly valued by international employers who come to UNI’s Overseas Recruiting Fair every year.

Graduates of the program have continued their education at doctoral programs in Linguistics and in Education, among other fields, and have been hired at educational institutions (particularly community colleges) and agencies in Iowa and other states, and around the world.
