Overview
Make an impact today on the leaders of tomorrow.
In the School Counseling program at the University of San Diego you will learn how to step in and help students overcome significant challenges during their most formative years. The program offers two specializations, each of which provides fulfilling opportunities to guide diverse populations of underserved students:
School Counseling: 48-units (2-years)
- Upon graduation, you will be awarded a MA in Counseling with a specialization in School Counseling and be eligible for California's Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) credential
- School counselors work in elementary, middle, and high school settings.
School Based Clinical Counseling: 60-units (2-years)
Upon graduation, you will be awarded a MA in Counseling with a specialization in School Based Clinical Counseling and will:
- Be eligible for California's Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) credential
- Meet California's course requirements to become a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC)
- Review the Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) for a list of full requirements to become a LPCC.
Both specializations will complete USD's required coursework, applied research, and an exit requirement to graduate. Through personalized learning and real-world experience in either specialization, you'll learn to help young minds from a variety of backgrounds.
You'll offer students support and guidance as they navigate their school-age years. You may work with students whose needs are culturally sensitive or specific to their social identities, such as the children who are refugees, are in foster care, or are in domestic violence situations.
The program supports your development as a community leader who inspires young students to do the same. Making an impact during students' most critical developmental years is one of the most effective ways to weave multiculturalism, social justice, and holistic well-being into our society.
