About the Program

To accommodate working individuals, classes meet two weekday evenings per week until student teaching. Courses are taken as a cohort group with coursework beginning in the fall semester. At the completion of the Elementary Education program at Oakland University, students will be eligible for a Michigan standard teaching certificate (grades K-8), as well as a Master of Arts in Teaching degree. For individuals whose prior coursework does not fulfill a teachable major and/or minor, additional undergraduate courses may be required for admission. This coursework must be completed prior to admission to the MATEE program.

Teachable Majors and Minors

All students must select and complete one of the following majors: Language Arts, Integrated Science, Math or Social Studies. You can view the course requirements for each major. Prior coursework will be considered, but you must have an official transcript review done to determine eligibility for the program.

Field Experiences and Student Teaching

One of the primary benefits of Oakland University’s teacher preparation program is field experiences provided in local school districts. Participants receive varied experiences working with school-age children and have an opportunity to apply coursework to the teaching environment as they learn it.

The two online recommendations must be from individuals in a supervisory relationship to the applicant

Experience Working with Children Form

Official transcripts will be required demonstrating: a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better (improved grades in recent coursework will be considered) and evidence of completion of one teaching major with a minimum grade of 2.7 or B- in each course. Additional major courses may be necessary for individuals whose prior coursework does not include sufficient credits for the core competencies set by the Michigan Department of Education for teaching in a major content area.
