The Master of Arts program in English at Appalachian State University offers students a broad knowledge of content in the discipline and helps them develop advanced proficiency in reading, writing, analysis and research skills, and teaching.

As a student, you will choose from one of three concentrations:

  • General English (36 hours) – designed for those planning to pursue a Ph.D., but also prepares students for other pursuits.
  • College Teaching (36 hours) – designed for those who would like to teach in community colleges or freshman/sophomore classes in four-year universities. This concentration emphasizes strong pedagogical preparation, including a teaching apprenticeship.
  • Rhetoric and Composition (36 hours) – new in Fall 2017
