Overview
The Urban Planning MUP program from San José State University provides students with an opportunity for developing a significant background in a particular area of focus.
A special mission of the department is to promote planning education opportunities for a diverse student population, including working students who prefer to attend the program on a part-time basis.
Graduates with Urban Planning from San José State University will be able to:
- Conceptualize planning problems from complex, real-world situations so that the problems are meaningful to clients, and are research-worthy.
- Communicate effectively.
- Work effectively as team members and leaders of planning teams, and to apply an understanding of interpersonal and group dynamics to assure effective group action.
- Analyze and synthesize planning knowledge and apply it to address actual planning problems.
- Develop planning strategies to advance community priorities through collaborative engagement with stakeholders, and do so in a manner that deliberately incorporates multicultural and historical perspectives.

- Submit one set of official transcripts from all higher educational institutions attended
- Three original signed letters of recommendation that comes from either university instructors who taught you or supervisors who managed you in paid or volunteer work
- A short biographical statement of purpose that indicates how a Master of Urban Planning degree will help you to achieve your career objectives
- Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores are required for applicants with a GPA below 3.0
- U.S. bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, or the completion of a 4-year bachelor’s degree from a recognized, accredited, and approved institution from a country outside of the U.S.
