, NC,
University of North Carolina Wilmington offers a program of study leading to the Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Geoscience. The general focus of the program is the development of professionals capable of conducting research in geoscience through broadly-based study of modern Earth and ocean processes and their ancient analogs.

The Geoscience program from University of North Carolina Wilmington includes both a thesis and non-thesis option, both of which provide a foundation for employment in the geological, geospatial technology, and environmental fields, mineral and energy industries, and government agencies.

In addition, the thesis option prepares students for advanced study leading to the doctoral degree while the non-thesis option provides a foundation for employment as entry-level professional geoscientists. Completion of the non-thesis option with a geology concentration assists students toward professional licensure in geology.

Specific goals of the program are to provide advanced research and educational opportunities in the geosciences, and to prepare geoscientists for solving contemporary problems in Earth, ocean and environmental science.

Specific objectives are:

  • to develop research competence in geoscience;
  • to develop professional competence in the assessment of water, energy and mineral resource potentials through the integrated analysis of geological and geographical data using advanced technologies;
  • to develop a level of research competence in geoscience that encourages continued effort towards the doctoral degree; and,
  • to provide the scientific community with meaningful geologic, geographic, and oceanographic data.

Academic Requirements

  • This programme accepts GRE® scores. However, it does not provide a recommended score range.

    The GRE® General Test is a widely administered admissions test that measures the skills needed in today's graduate and business school programs worldwide. The GRE® General Test contains three sections - Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Three scores are reported: a Verbal Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, a Quantitative Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, and an Analytical Writing score on a 0 - 6 score scale in half-point increments.

  • Students seeking admission to the graduate program in Geoscience must hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college (or its equivalent in a foreign institution based on a four-year program) in a discipline appropriate to advanced study in the geosciences.
  • Students should have a strong overall academic record with a "B" average on the basic courses prerequisite to geoscience and satisfactory scores on the Graduate Record Examination.
  • Upon entrance into the master's program, the student's advisor may identify deficiencies and recommend remedies. All deficiencies must be removed before a student is accepted as a candidate for the degree.
