Overview
This English Education (Grades 7-12) programme at Syracuse University prepares students with an English or literature background to teach in secondary education settings. Graduates will deepen knowledge of English content while developing skills in integration of media and technology, multi-level teaching, and standards-based assessment, all with an emphasis on cultural and linguistic diversity. This programme aligns with the professional standards of the National Council for Teachers of English, and meets the academic requirements for initial and professional New York State teacher certification in English Language Arts (grades 7-12).

General requirements
- Bachelor’s degree and a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0
- An English major, or a 30-credit major equivalent (including 9 credits of writing instruction or writing intensive courses) determined via transcript review
- Official transcript of all undergraduate and graduate study
- A personal essay describing the candidate’s beliefs about student learning, commitment to diversity, enthusiasm for learning, willingness to foster collaboration, and ethics.
- 3 Letters of recommendation, at least one from a faculty member
- Experience working with young people in formal or informal capacities
- Interview encouraged
- GRE not required (optional)
- TOEFL is required for applicants whose native language is other than English
- Applicants with or without existing NYS teacher certification may apply; however, applicants must have NO existing English Language Arts certification
