Overview

Outcomes for the options in the Patient Counseling program at Virginia Commonwealth University are described in the ACPE Standards:

Chaplain Certification Concentration

The first option is Chaplain Certification concentration and is available to individuals who have a previous graduate degree or who have at least two years of graduate education in theology, the behavioral sciences, or the health related sciences. It is assumed that completion of this option will take 4-5 semesters.

Dual Degree Concentration (M.S./M.Div.)

The second option is the Dual Degree concentration (M.S./M.Div.) which is offered cooperatively with The Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology of Virginia Union University in Richmond). The dual degree is designed as a four-year program with four full semesters spent in residence at VCU. Students enrolled in the dual-degree program will remain in good standing at VCU while enrolled in their seminary studies. Each sponsoring institution will grant its respective degree.

Accelerated Master of Science

The third option is an Accelerated Master of Science degree available to students who hold a Master´s degree and who have completed one unit of ACPE clinical pastoral education.

Certified Educator CPE Education

The fourth option is offered to persons seeking concentration in Certified Educator CPE Education according to the Standards of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc (ACPE). Individuals seeking admission to this track will have completed the Master of Divinity degree and at least four units of clinical pastoral education.

A bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution reflecting ability to perform at the graduate level; graduate degree in a health-related field; or two years of graduate theological education

The Association of Clinical Pastoral Education Inc. application materials

Copies of all previous self- and supervisor’s CPE evaluations and two verbatim case studies of clinical work

An interview with the faculty admission committee will be granted based on application material

Chaplain certification concentration

A previous graduate degree or who have at least two years of graduate education in theology, the behavioral sciences or the health-related sciences

A minimum GPA of 3.0

Submission of the GRE is required when this GPA requirement is not met.

Applicants holding degrees from foreign institutions should display a level of English proficiency: a minimum score of 550 on the TOEFL paper-based or 100 on the Internet-based
