About

Since its inception in 1913, LSU’s graduate program in History has graduated almost nine hundred M.A.s and Ph.D.s. There are currently about seventy students enrolled in the graduate program. LSU offers the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in US, British, European, and Latin American history. Students may also elect a minor field in Asian history.

The thesis-option M.A. requires 30 semester hours of credit, including at least six hours of thesis credit, and a research thesis. The non-thesis M.A. (considered a terminal degree) requires 36 hours of course work and passing the M.A. comprehensive examination. The department, in conjunction with the School of Library and Information Science, offers a dual degree program in which a student can earn a Master’s of Art degree in History and a Master’s of Library Science and Information degree simultaneously with the completion of 64 hours.

The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 3

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

  • This programme accepts GRE® scores, however, has not provided a recommended or minimum required score range.

The GRE® General Test is a widely administered admissions test that measures the skills needed in today's graduate and business school programs worldwide. The GRE® General Test contains three sections - Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Three scores are reported: a Verbal Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, a Quantitative Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, and an Analytical Writing score on a 0 - 6 score scale in half-point increments.

  • Students applying for entrance to the Graduate School must submit an application for admission.
  • Students must submit their scores on the GRE; the minimum combined score required for application is 300. In addition, official transcripts of all previous undergraduate and graduate work, a statement of purpose, three letters of recommendation and a writing sample of approximately 10-20 pages should be submitted online as supporting materials.
  • The entire application, including all supporting materials, must be submitted via the LSU Graduate School’s online application website. Hard copies of official transcripts should be mailed directly to the Graduate School admissions office.
