Overview
The Design and Technology degree at Florida Atlantic University offers an integral, creative, and inclusive space for professionals of all backgrounds looking to take their careers in design, stage technology, and stage management to the next level.
Key Features
During the intensive two year curriculum, the MFAs receive in-depth training in a variety of techniques, skills, and tools essential to their area of interest, are given opportunities to connect with professional theatre artists in their field, and regularly design or manage the departmental season, Summer Rep productions, and the professional resident theatre company productions.
During their tenure at FAU, the MFAs receive tuition waivers and are assigned a job within the department.
The highly selective MFA degree is a two-year, 60 credit terminal degree consisting of classroom study, practical performance and production experience, and the completion of a graduate thesis.
This includes two summers honing your skills in the Festival Repertory Theatre that has the students work alongside professionals from the field.
What opportunities will you have?
A competitive financial package for each student, which includes a full tuition waiver as well as an assistantship to cover living expenses. There are also several other graduate scholarships/grants offered by the University.
During their residency at FAU the MFA candidates work regularly in the technical design studios and shops. During their second year, the MFA students are also given faculty teaching opportunities.
FAU produces four main stage productions and one Studio 2 production during the school year, and two main stage productions every summer. The Design and Technology students have multiple opportunities to creatively and actively implement the skills they are learning in these productions.
Additionally, the professional resident theatre company Theatre Lab offers a variety of stage management and backstage opportunities for the students in their new work development workshops, their Hecksher Theatre for Families production, and their three Main Stage productions.
