Overview
Key facts
Statistics plays an important role throughout society, providing methodologies for advances in medicine, genetics and other research arenas, and for making decisions in business and public policy. Statistics is part of the natural, mathematical and biomedical sciences field in the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences.
The Department of Statistics at George Washington University also offers a graduate certificate in survey design and data analysis, as well as M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in biostatistics and epidemiology.
Founded in 1935, GW’s Department of Statistics was the first department of its kind in the United States to be housed in a college of arts and sciences. Since then, GW Statistics — a STEM-designated discipline — has established itself as a global leader in statistical education and research.
Thanks to our location in the heart of Washington, D.C., students benefit through our access and collaborations with the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Cancer Institute, the Department of Labor and other organizations that are using statistics to make remarkable advances every day.
