Key Facts

The Spanish program of The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is designed to provide a rich variety of graduate coursework in a major world language, which is increasingly important in North Carolina and the United States. Staffed by faculty with national and international reputations, the program serves individuals who seek:

a greater understanding of Spanish language, literatures and cultures;
career and professional advancement opportunities in translation, applied language (Spanish for the professions and specific purposes, such as business and international trade), and education; and/or
a Ph.D. in fields such as Hispanic literature, linguistics, translating and translation studies, intercultural communication, or international studies.

The M.A. in Spanish builds on a very successful undergraduate program that has some 150 majors and 165 minors in Spanish, an undergraduate Certificate in Translating, offered since 1979, and a Certificate in Business Spanish, offered since 1998. To date, we have graduated 100 M.A. students from North Carolina, across the country, and beyond. During the academic year, we generally average 8-15 graduate students who are enrolled in the M.A. program.

A baccalaureate degree in Spanish or in a related field that required upper-division coursework in undergraduate Spanish (e.g., Latin American Studies, International Studies, International Business), with an overall GPA of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale)

A well-developed essay written in English that addresses the applicant’s motivation for enrolling in the M.A. in Spanish, to include particular areas of research interests and career or professional goals

Students must demonstrate a high level of proficiency in both languages (English and Spanish) by providing writing samples in each language

An oral interview with the Graduate Program Director
