Most notably, however, our program offers to poets and fiction writers in a single year (usually including summer study) a rigorous combination of literary study and focus on craft equivalent to what other MFA programs accomplish in two years.
Our program also offers practical experience in teaching creative writing at the high school or undergraduate level through teaching fellowships. Such an intensive curriculum is only possible because of the dedication, talent and energy of the students who choose to attend the BU MFA Program. The accelerated nature of the program creates close bonds between each year’s cohorts of poets and fiction writers, who also benefit from the intellectual and artistic stimulation of being part of a large university in one of the most lively and beautiful cities in the United States.
Finally, our students have the opportunity for world language study, including the option of taking BU’s renowned Translation Seminar, culminating in a Global Fellowship that affords them the opportunity for travel, writing, and study for a period of up to three months anywhere outside of the United States.

The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. For International Applicants:
The living costs include the total expenses per month, covering accommodation, public transportation, utilities (electricity, internet), books and groceries.
Once admitted, every student gets financial help: a full tuition and a stipend. A part of the stipend is the payment for teaching a course at BU, usually an introduction to creative writing for BU’s undergraduates or at the nearby Boston Arts Academy, a pilot public school. All admitted students are qualified for a Global Fellowship upon completion of their degree requirements, which allows them to travel for two or three months anywhere outside of the United States. In recent years everyone who applied received such a fellowship. That is our way of launching you into the world.
Studyportals Tip: Students can search online for independent or external scholarships that can help fund their studies. Check the scholarships to see whether you are eligible to apply. Many scholarships are either merit-based or needs-based.
Together with the ISIC Association and British Council IELTS, Studyportals offers you the chance to receive up to £10000 to expand your horizon and study abroad. We want to ultimately encourage you to study abroad in order to experience and explore new countries, cultures and languages.
