Basic Degree Information/Description
The Department of Counseling offers the Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree in School Counseling. In addition to application to the M.Ed. graduate program, students should apply to the School Counseling Certification Program if they intend to practice as a certified professional school counselor in a school setting upon meeting state requirements. The School Counseling program of The University of Texas at San Antonio is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). General requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Special Education, Sociology, or closely related field
- Applicants without adequate coursework preparation in Education, Psychology, Sociology or related field may be required to take COU 3103 Helping Skills and, at the discretion of the admissions committee, to complete up to 15 additional hours of preparatory courses as a condition of admission
- A completed a Graduate School application
- Official transcripts from all institutions attended. All international transcripts must be recorded in English or officially translated to English along with an evaluation of the transcripts from Foreign Credentials Service of America
- Three Applicant Rating forms are required
- A two-page narrative statement is required
- English language proficiency test scores
- Applicants must hold a 2.7 grade point average during the last 60 hours of their undergraduate studies to be eligible for admission to the counseling program
