The Master of Arts degree in English offers the student an opportunity to acquire a general knowledge of literatures written primarily in English, to understand the historical and cultural contexts in which that literature was produced, to develop skills in critical analysis, and to conduct literary, rhetorical, and linguistic research.

The program enables students to advance in the field of English by studying various approaches to diverse literatures, preparing to teach literature and writing, and developing the intellectual and critical skills necessary for professional advancement. The program provides a firm foundation for further study at the doctoral level and it offers a model of study that prepares students for the twenty-first century challenges of cultural diversity.

Three scores are reported: a Verbal Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, a Quantitative Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, and an Analytical Writing score on a 0 - 6 score scale in half-point increments.
