The Asian Studies program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa is offered in Plan A (thesis) and Plan B (non-thesis) formats. Regarding the latter two, a student may concentrate on a particular country within those regions if sufficient courses are available.

Program Learning Objectives

The Asian Studies program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa expects the student to:

Possess an advanced understanding of at least one Asian language.

Demonstrate an understanding of issues and problems in the arts, humanities, and social sciences as related to Asia.

Demonstrate the ability to understand research and conduct research using at least one of the methodologies of various disciplines i.e. humanities, arts and social sciences.

Demonstrate ability in integrating all of the above factors in a final major research project.

Hold or expect to hold prior to matriculation a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university, or an equivalent degree from a recognized non-U.S. institution of higher education.

Submit a copy of the passport identification pages, or a copy of the national identification card if a passport is not available.

Submit one transcript or academic record from each institution of higher education attended, including any study abroad or exchange programs, summer programs, and non-degree work and extension programs.

Applicants whose native language is not English are required to take English Language Proficiency.

Show proof of sufficient funding to cover all educational and living expenses, including expenses for any accompanying spouse or children.
