The only one of its kind in the U.S., the MFA at UTEP offers a fully bilingual (Spanish and English) course of study in fiction, poetry, playwriting, screenwriting, literary translation and non-fiction.


Located in the Chihuahuan Desert, where two nations meet, our program is constantly evolving to meet the needs of students coming from the United States, Latin America and the rest of the world. We offer assistantships to many of our students.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

General Requirements

For Foreign Students: Begin your application process no later than November 15. Minimum requirements for admission include:
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • A Bachelor’s degree in any field of study
  • A creative writing sample. If it is poetry, your sample should be between 8 to 10 poems. If it is prose (fiction, drama, screenplay, creative non-fiction or literary essay) not more than 20 pages or 6.000 words.
  • An official transcript of your undergraduate studies
  • A Statement of Purpose
  • Three letters of recommendation
All students must fill out a Graduate School Application in EMBARK and must pay an application fee.
