History
When Duke Ludwig the Wealthy of Bavaria-Landshut founded Bavaria's first university with a papal concession in 1472, no one could imagine that over the next five hundred years it would move twice and emerge as one of the largest universities in Germany, providing some of the country's strongest research.
Education
Today LMU Munich has matured into one of the worlds leading international universities, fully competitive with the other major institutions of higher learning and research. It continues to build on its distinct identity and its core skills in research and instruction in order to confront both academic challenges and the hugely complex demands of the changing world.
Research
Research Services offers support to researchers during all phases of research from consultation on acquiring third-party funding to the administrative, financial, and legal aspects of projects and efficient technology transfer. Center for Leadership and People Management The Center for Leadership and People Management offers an internationally unique personnel enhancement scheme for all academics actively involved in research projects as well as all postdocs at LMU Munich.
Career
Dual Career Service The Dual Career Service supports the spouses or domestic partners of newly appointed professors at LMU Munich, as well as those of junior academics from abroad, in their search for adequate positions and in advancing their careers.

Services Exchange is at the core of the globalization of knowledge. To attract the worlds most talented graduates and scholars to LMU Munich, the university makes a point of providing them with various support services ensuring optimum conditions for their research.
Housing services
Housing in Munich is both hard to find and more expensive than anywhere else in Germany.But: the situation is not hopeless. Housing is arranged for LMU exchange students from selected partner universities. For all others some subsidized student housing is available. For private housing the city offers a variety of solutions, from student co-ops to rooms in homes.
Library services
Whereas the holdings of the decentralized libraries are generally not available for lending, the Main Library houses lending stocks totaling 2.4 million volumes. These include the valuable old inventory of over 3,000 manuscripts and approximately 400,000 old prints up to the publication year 1900, the second largest in the Free State of Bavaria.
ICT services
As a student, you’ll have internet access (with WiFi in all university buildings), an email address, and a personal webpage through LMU Munich. You will also have access to computer labs and other related services like printing, copying, scanning, etc. All services are either free or very inexpensive.
Medical services
Health insurance must cover the following:
- doctor and dentist treatment
- supply of medication, dressing and aid
- hospital treatment
- medical services for rehabilitation
- assistance through pregnancy and labor
Campus life
The Munich Student Union runs a total of 33 cafeterias, StuBistros, StuCafés, and espresso bars, with detailed descriptions online. You can even peruse the daily menus online. There are an ever-increasing number of organic options, all for affordable prices. The main cafeteria (Mensa) is Leopoldstr. 13a. During the semester, it is open Monday to Thursday, 11:00am – 2:30pm, and on Friday, 11:00am – 1:55pm. Breakfast is served in the cafeterias and StuCafés.
Sports facilities
The university sports facilities are located on campus at the former site of the 1972 Summer Olympics, the Olympiapark. The 45-acre grounds—worth visiting for historical reasons—include, among other things, the Olympic swimming pool, Ice Sport Center, Olympic Tennis Complex, Socca Arena, and a golf practice facility.
