About
History
The academic history of Turku extends all the way back to the 13th century, when people from Turku went to study in the universities of Central Europe. In 1640, the first university of Finland, the Royal Academy of Turku, was established by Christina, Queen of Sweden.The University of Turku was established in 1920 with the aid of donations from 22 040 citizens, and it became the first Finnish university in Finland.The University’s founding years was an era of strong patriotism and Finland took its first steps as an independent country. Research
Straightforward researcher career path and the advancement of international mobility increase the quality and effectiveness of research. We are increasing the number of postdoctoral researchers recruited through international application processes, and we are developing the use of the Tenure Track system further in the whole University.

The University of Turku has operatios all over Finland – from Utsjoki, Lappland to Finnish Archipelago Sea. Education is mainly focused on three campuses: Turku, Pori and Rauma.

Student clubs
The Student Union of the University of Turku (TYY, Turun yliopiston ylioppilaskunta) is a public corporation completely independent of the University of Turku. The role of TYY is to represent its members, to advance the position of students in society and provide them with services ranging from consultations with lawyers to parties and sports opportunities
