Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences

The ESSB is home to a vast diversity of study programmes and scientific disciplines: Public Administration, Pedagogical Sciences, Psychology and Sociology. In addition, the Erasmus University College, IHS, and two research institutes RISBO and DRIFT are linked to the faculty. Our education is small-scale and based around Problem Based Learning (PBL).

Erasmus University Rotterdam has been in existence in its present form since 1973. Its history, however, dates back to 1913, the year in which the Netherlands School of Commerce (Nederlandsche Handels-Hoogeschool, NHH) was founded through private initiative with broad support from the Rotterdam business community.

Erasmus University Rotterdam is a highly ranked, international research university, based in the dynamic and diverse city of Rotterdam. We integrate academic research with excellent, challenging and inspiring education. We offer a broad range of interesting Bachelor programmes, Master programmes and Executive programmes. Highly motivated and talented students have the possibility to participate in our Honours programmes.

Erasmus University Rotterdam is an international academic institute for critical thinking and academic training with a keen interest in current social issues. The research conducted at EUR is grouped into four areas of expertise and organised into programmes, is fundamental in nature and has a strong social bias. The nature of the research is interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary.

The four areas of expertise are linked to the university’s seven faculties. The research grouped in the four areas is conducted at the nationally recognised research schools and research institutes or in the faculty research groups.

Housing services

In and around Rotterdam there is lettable accommodation available on the private market, but it comes at a cost... Experience has taught us that, if you look hard and focus on more than one agency, it is possible to find a house or apartment in a Dutch city or village. Your budget and your choice of location play an important part in this process.

Library services

The library and the Polak Building on Woudestein campus have several functions:  meeting, studying and working together. But there is more. On the following pages you will find information about:

  • Study areas;
  • Information for non-EUR visitors;
  • Erasmus Data Service Centre;
  • Bloomberg Class;
  • History Didactics Collection;
  • Jan Tinbergen Collection;
  • Rotterdamsch Leeskabinet;

Student Life

Campus life

The hub of Erasmus University Rotterdam is our Woudestein campus, a convenient 15-minute bike ride from Rotterdam’s city centre, including the sleek new Rotterdam Centraal train station (where you can also catch the tram or metro to EUR.) Outside of class time, students study in the light-filled new Polak building or at our state-of-the-art university library, grab a coffee at the Erasmus Food Plaza, or attend an event at the theatre or Café in de Smitse. The on-campus sports centre offers fitness, dance, spinning, squash, and tennis among many other classes.

Sports facilities

Erasmus Sport offers an extensive sports program all through the academic year, under the leadership of enthusiastic instructors and trainers. They supervise the individual sportspeople or train the teams of the sports clubs affiliated with Erasmus Sport.

Student clubs

Rotterdam has a number of different student associations. These associations are somewhat comparable to fraternities and sororities. These associations all have their own personality and identity and if you decide to become a member you can meet many different people of different ages, studies and backgrounds. The RKVV (Rotterdamse Kamer van Verenigingen, Rotterdam Chamber of Associations) is the link between the associations and the university. Seven associations joined the RKVV. Every association has her own unique view on student life. More information about the associations can be found here
