Originally founded in 1946 as a teacher-training college, Leuphana University Lüneburg was granted university status in 1989. The university became a foundation under public law in 2004 and merged with the University of Applied Sciences North-East Lower Saxony in 2005.

Leuphana University of Lüneburg understands its role as theme-oriented university dedicated to the current research issues affecting the civil society of the 21st century. In order to facilitate necessary subject-overarching research, Leuphana’s research activities are installed within four university-wide, inter- and cross-disciplinary “Research Initiatives”, namely: education, culture, management and business activity, and sustainability. Each of Leuphana’s four faculties directs one of the knowledge initiatives. Researchers within the research initiatives apply an inter- and cross-disciplinary method to expand on a number of cross-sectional topics

Great learning, supportive, needs more practical work.
I'm a second-year student in the Sustainability Sciences program at Leuphana University of L�neburg, and I have to say that it's been an incredible journey so far. What drew me to Leuphana was its strong focus on sustainability and social responsibility. As someone who's passionate about making a positive impact on the world, I knew that Leuphana was the perfect fit for me. The university's campus is located in the heart of L�neburg, which is a beautiful and charming town. The campus itself is modern and sustainable, with plenty of green spaces and energy-efficient buildings. Academically, I've been really impressed with the program. The professors are all experts in their fields, and they're really passionate about what they teach. The classes are relatively small, which means we get a lot of individual attention and feedback. And the coursework is really relevant to the real world � we're not just learning theory, we're also learning how to apply it in practice. One of the things I love most about Leuphana is its strong sense of community. The university has a really diverse student body, with people from all over the world. And despite our differences, we all share a common goal � to make a positive impact on the world. The university also offers a wide range of extracurricular activities and programs, from sustainability projects to cultural events. There's always something going on, whether it's a lecture, a workshop, or a concert. If I had to give one piece of advice to future students, it would be to take advantage of the university's many resources and opportunities. From research projects to internships, there are countless ways to get involved and make a difference. Overall, I'm so glad I chose Leuphana University of L�neburg. Students in Lüneburg live either in halls of residence, which are located on or close to the campus or in the city centre, or in private rooms or apartments. While only students live in the halls of residence, students also live together with working people in the private apartments. Both in the halls of residence and in private apartments, there are usually mixed-gender flat-sharing communities (WGs), in which the kitchen and bathroom are shared, but each flatmate has its own bedroom. Shared rooms are unusual in Germany, except for a short stay in a youth hostel. Students who prefer to live alone, opt for a single apartment.
The Electronic Journals Library provides acces to licensed titles as well as openly availably scientific journals. It contains approximately 34.000 titles. We strive to continously grow our e-book collection, which currently consists of approximately 161.000 titles. All titles can be found through LUX or the catalogue.
