Our story began in 1963, when the Milton S. Hershey Foundation gave $50 million to The Pennsylvania State University to establish a medical school in Hershey. We were the first medical school in the nation to have a dedicated Department of Humanities and a Department of Family and Community Medicine.

At Penn State College of Medicine, we are committed to enhancing health by preparing the next generation of clinicians, educators and scientists to be the leaders and change agents of 21st-century medicine and research. We will meet this goal through the education of medical and nursing students, basic science graduate students, medical residents, medical and postdoctoral fellows, students in other healthcare-related professions and practicing health professionals.

Penn State College of Medicine has nationally recognized investigators advancing the understanding of health sciences across a broad continuum of research types:

  • Clinical: Medical research directly involving patients that seeks to better understand and manage human illnesses
  • Translational: Research that applies the discoveries made by basic research investigators to studies with patients or to best practices in the practice of medicine
