Southern Arkansas University

Southern Arkansas University is the fastest growing university in Arkansas. The campus is a buzz with energy and life, and the student-centered atmosphere is felt by first-time visitors and soon-to-be graduates.

Southern Arkansas University (SAU), a comprehensive regional public university, was founded more than a century ago as the Third District Agricultural School (TDAS). It was one of four such schools established by Act 100 of the Arkansas legislature on April 1, 1909, a date celebrated at SAU as Founder’s Day. It opened on January 3, 1911, as a residential secondary agricultural school.

The mission of Southern Arkansas University is to educate students for productive and fulfilling lives in a global environment by providing opportunities for intellectual growth, individual enrichment, skill development, and meaningful career preparation. The University believes in the worth of the individual and accepts its responsibility for developing in its students those values and competencies essential for effective citizenship in an ever-changing, free, and democratic society. Further, the University provides an environment conducive to excellence in teaching and learning, scholarship, creative endeavors, and service.

Housing services

Columbia Hall is a new freshman only residence hall that was opened in August of 2016. This residence hall is the home of freshman who has a 22 or higher on the ACT or a 3.25 or higher G.P.A. Columbia houses SAU’s residential college that focuses on the students’ academic and personal success through leadership development and service learning.  Columbia hall has kitchenettes on every floor, along with several semi-private bathrooms that give extra privacy to our residents.

Library services

Magale Library’s reference and instructional librarians aspire to train students to use library resources to their fullest. Through personal attention and professional training, students learn to conduct research themselves, solve problems, and become lifelong learners.

Medical services

The UHS primary goal is to aid in the retention of students by offering a variety of services to meet the mental, emotional, and physical needs of the SAU student body. We provide health promotion and disease prevention services for students, faculty, and staff.
