LUMS was founded in 1984 by the patronage of the business–industrial community spearheaded by Syed Babar Ali. With advice from the Harvard Business School and a $10 million grant from USAID, It established a graduate business school in 1986

Office of Sponsored Programmes and research (OSPR) is actively perusing its mandate to promote research culture at LUMS and is acting as a bridge between LUMS faculty and funding agencies

The focus is on enriching student lives by making recreational facilties avaialble to students whle rsident. The Housing Office oversees all the rsidences, dealing with all aspects of on-campus residence, including student housing, accommodation, repairs and maintenance
The library has an extensive collection of over 200,000 printed and 130,000 online books, 35,000 journals, and 30,000 other materials including audios, videos, CD-ROMs, DVDs, etc. The library is manned by qualified and experienced professionals, all dedicated to provide high quality innovative services
Students can avail the services of an experienced on-campus physician who is available for medical consultation over five hours for five working days a week. During exams week, the doctor is available over weekends as well.
The doctor's clinic is equipped with adequate medical supplies which include essential medicines and also facilitates health promotion and prevention services for students
The oldest building at LUMS is the two-storeyed Academic Block designed by Habib Fida Ali which spreads over an area of 150,000 sq ft. The Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences is based in this building.The five-story Suleman Dawood School of Business building occupying a covered area of 160,000 sq ft. and accommodates over 1300 students. The Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering is based out of a 5-floor building which covers an area of 300,000 sq ft, the building includes a 10MW electrical grid station and includes 20 research labs
More than half of the student body at LUMS lives on campus each year which includes seven male and four female hostels. The Syed Maratab Ali Sports Complex includes a school gym and sports facilities for basketball, tennis, cricket and squash. The Pepsi Dining Centre (PDC) covers an area of 14,000 sq ft. and was funded by PepsiCo. The Coca-Cola Aquatic Centre includes an Olympic-size swimming pool and is funded by a Rs. 22 million grant from the Coca-Cola Company
