John Carroll is a private, coeducational, Jesuit Catholic university providing programs of study in the liberal arts, sciences, and business at the undergraduate level and in selected areas at the master’s level.

  • 1876 First invitation of Bishop Richard Gilmour, Bishop of Cleveland, to the Buffalo Mission Jesuits to establish a college in Cleveland.
  • September 6, 1886 St. Ignatius College opens. 76 students are in the first class.
  • September 10, 1923 The University is renamed John Carroll University after Bishop John Carroll, the first American Bishop.


Degree programs through the College of Arts and Sciences and the Boler School of Business are offered in nearly 60 major fields in the arts, social sciences, natural sciences, and business at the undergraduate level, and in select areas at the master’s level.


The Center for Career Services at John Carroll University excels in connecting employers with JCU students and alumni. Each year we put hundreds of employers in contact with qualified JCU candidates for internship, full-time, entry-level, experienced, and part-time positions.

Student Life

Campus life

Twenty-six buildings on 60 landscaped acres make up the Carroll campus. Wireless internet access is available to all students on campus, as are the campus Fitness Center and swimming pool. The Dolan Center for Science and Technology houses the departments of biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and computer science, and psychology, and supports initiatives to improve K-12 education and encourage technology start-ups in northeastern Ohio.
