IU Northwest is the result of growth and change that began in 1921 when the university offered its first formal classes in Lake County as part of a program sponsored by the Gary Public School System. Under various names and in various locations, Indiana University has been serving the needs of higher education in northwest Indiana ever since.

Step on our vibrant campus and you’ll find more than 70 degree programs, flexible learning options, top-notch faculty and a diverse community to call your own. Home to one of Northwest Indiana’s top business schools and only medical school, IU Northwest promises you a lifetime of success, no matter what you want to do.

Just one century ago, northwest Indiana was one of the most ecologically dynamic and diverse areas in North America. Various geographical, climatological, and historical factors merged here to create an ecological tapestry rarely encountered on our continent. However, just one century of urbanization and suburban sprawl have nearly obliterated this remarkable natural heritage.  Fortunately, pieces of this treasure have been preserved; these preserves are usually small, isolated, and have suffered abuses. Dr. Spencer Cortwright’s research is restoring prairie and wetlands along the Little Calumet River in Gary.

The Student Advising Center (SAC) provides academic information, resources, and services to all undergraduate students, with a primary focus on exploratory students. Our mission is to continuously help you become informed, responsible and empowered learners by providing student-focused, professional academic advising.
