The University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland FHNW ranks amongst Switzerland's leading and most innovative universities of applied sciences. It is composed of nine Schools covering Applied Psychology, Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geomatics, Art and Design, Life Sciences,Music, Teacher Education, Social Work, Engineering and Business. The modern campuses are in northwestern Switzerland, near the borders with Germany and France and in the immediate vicinity of the cities of Basel and Zurich, as well as of national and international companies.
Aside from the education and training offering, a high priority is placed on applied research and development. The FHNW participates in research projects alongside national and international partners from industry, business, culture, administration and institutions and is involved in European research programmes.
EU citizens from Western Europe do not need visas: valid passports alone are required. EU citizens from Eastern Europe and non-EU citizens should contact the Swiss Embassy or Consulate about whether entry permits and visas are required. Any costs incurred are borne by the student.Generally, your stay in Switzerland will be permitted on the basis of a student visa. This does not permit you to work in Switzerland. Foreign nationals require separate permission to work alongside their studies. If approval is forthcoming, it is generally for no more than 15 hours a week. The approval process differs from canton to canton depending on the applicant's nationality.
The Franziskushaus near Olten provides furnished rooms for foreign students on a rental basis. The FHNW is unable to offer student lodgings at its other campuses.

Students are strongly advised to take out their own insurance policies to cover health, accident and personal liability in Switzerland, or check that their current policies are valid for Switzerland.Swiss law requires that everyone staying in Switzerland for three months or more has medical insurance.
