In 1819, Thomas Jefferson founded the University of Virginia and inaugurated a bold experiment – a public university designed to advance human knowledge, educate leaders and cultivate an informed citizenry.
The University of Virginia encompasses twelve schools in Charlottesville, as well as the College at Wise in Southwest Virginia. In 2019, the University was ranked the No. 3 best public university by U.S. News & World Report. In the 20 years since U.S. News began ranking public universities as a separate category, UVA has ranked in the top three and continues to rank in the Top 30 among the best of all national universities, public and private.
Collectively, UVA's research productivity, quality, and impact are strong but could be even stronger.
We have identified five priority areas that represent major societal challenges and opportunities and draw on our existing strengths: Democracy, Environmental Resilience and Sustainability, Precision Medicine, the Brain and Neuroscience, and Digital Technology and Society. In each area, we will take a coordinated approach through institutes, centers, and labs to amplify the impact of our faculty’s work.

UVA supported me academically in both departments I majored in. I had great advisors and professors who encouraged me to push myself and apply for the Distinguished Majors Program (for an Honors Degree), which I successfully completed. The campus was beautiful and Charlottesville is a great city.
