A Jesuit seminary was founded in 1588. By the beginning of the 17th century, it was already offering philosophical-theological lectures, thereby laying the groundwork for the establishment of a university.

With over 55,000 students, Münster is one of the largest university towns in Germany. Accommodation is not easy to find because it is scarce and demand is high, especially at the beginning of the semester. Therefore we strongly advise you to start looking for accommodation several months before you arrive in Germany.
The Physics Branch Library houses the printed copies of various journals relevant to the department. Students and employees of the Department's EMU can also access a large number of these magazines directly in their workplace in electronic form .
It's hard to imagine life in Münster without the University of Münster. A fifth of the 300,000 "Münsteraner" are students at one of eight universities, of which the University of Münster is the largest. The cultural attractions, sport and leisure options, incentives for families— in short, everything that enriches life alongside studying and research is on hand in the city and at the University. Münster is one large campus.
University Sports (Hochschulsport) offers students and staff a diverse athletic programme which includes some 150 types of sports, sporting trips and, of course, competitions of every kind.
