Overview
Why do people ignore important messages, stick with familiar habits, or make choices that don’t seem to be in their best interest?
Behavioural science helps answer these questions and shows how to change behaviour in real-world settings. Learn how to apply psychological insight in practical, career-focused contexts. From public policy to business and technology, behavioural science is now a key skillset for organisations looking to better understand and influence decision-making.
Reasons to study:
Skills that translate directly into careers: understand what drives people’s behaviour in real-world contexts, use data to inform decisions and solve practical problems, design and test interventions that create measurable impact, communicate insights clearly to different audiences, from policymakers to organisations. These are the same capabilities used across government, consulting, the non-profit sector, finance, and tech, making graduates well positioned for a wide range of international career paths.
Built-in work experience: with a dedicated work placement module with organisations such as NatCen, where students contribute to ongoing research and behavioural insight projects.
A strong foundation for global careers: across the public sector, government, and non-profit organisations, taking on roles that design and evaluate programmes in health, education, environmental, and animal protection contexts or in the private sector as consultants, managers, data analysts, social media strategists, or marketing professionals.
Test out your own theories and hypotheses in our excellent facilities, including brain stimulation and virtual reality laboratories.

General requirements
A Bachelor's or Master's degree with:
a. The required academic achievement in an acceptable subject
Acceptable subjects include first or second-class honours degrees (or equivalent) in psychology, social or behavioural sciences, social policy, political science, sociology, or another relevant field. We also encourage applications from candidates with related academic or professional backgrounds who can demonstrate a strong interest in understanding and influencing human behaviour
b. Statistics and research methods training in the social sciences
This programme includes a statistics module which you must normally pass to receive your award.
The teaching assumes that you are familiar with basic statistics such as:
- means and standard deviations
- hypothesis testing (e.g. t-tests)
- statistical significance
- correlation coefficients.
Therefore, to help ensure that you are well prepared and able to succeed in your studies, we recommend that you have knowledge of basic statistics before applying. Ideally, this would include having taken and passed modules covering this content as part of your current or previous degree studies. A British Psychological Society-accredited degree will likely have included this content.
Applicants with other degrees may be asked to provide additional evidence of training in statistics.
