Overview
The Urban Studies programme of the University of Amsterdam combines the disciplines of urban geography, economic geography, urban and regional planning, and urban sociology to provide a multidisciplinary and comprehensive approach to studying urban change, as well as the opportunities and challenges this produces. You will learn about contemporary urban phenomena and will be trained in a variety of research methodologies and techniques to understand these from a critical perspective.
Careers
The programme is specifically designed for excellent students wishing to pursue a career in research. Graduated students find positions as
- PhD-student and/or Assistant Professor
- Policy maker at various municipalities, provinces or Dutch ministries
- Consultants in real estate development or in environmental development.

General requirements
- A Bachelors’ in a social sciences related discipline (such as human geography, sociology, urban and regional planning, political science and anthropology), are invited to apply to the Research Masters in Urban Studies, providing they meet all other entry requirements
- Applicants are expected to have some experience of either study in the field of urban studies, or work in a related area. Applicants with no formal background in urban studies should be able to otherwise demonstrate a familiarity with contemporary urban theories and issues
- A solid basis in both qualitative and quantitative social science research methodology as demonstrated by the completion of at least one undergraduate course (or equivalent) in social research methods
- GPA of at least a B+/A /3.5 (American system), second class, upper division Honours degree (British system), B (ECTS system), 7.5 (Dutch system) or equivalent
- English language proficiency
