The curriculum of the International Development Studies programme of the University of Amsterdam discusses societal transformation and development trajectories at different interacting levels, ranging from the micro-level of individuals and households to the macro-level of states and finally to the global level.

Careers

The two-year Research Master's programmes in International Development Studies is specifically designed for excellent students wising to pursue a career in research. The main objective is to prepare students for an academic career, a career in applied research, or research-intensive jobs in policy or professional fields. Graduates should be able to successfully start PhD research or acquire a position of equivalent level in applied research or policy practice.

General requirements

A Bachelor’s degree in development studies or in another closely related discipline (such as human geography, sociology, social/cultural anthropology, political science and economics) are invited to apply, provided they meet all other entry requirements

International degrees are evaluated on the basis of advice from professional diploma evaluators. The minimum level of the degree should be equivalent to three years of Dutch university education

A solid basis in the field of development studies of at least (an equivalent of) 30 ECTS credits earned during previous study

A solid basis in both qualitative and quantitative social sciences research methodology as demonstrated by the completion of (the equivalent of) at least 30 ECTS during previous study

An overall GPA of at least a B+/A /3.5 (American system), second class, upper division Honours degree (British system), B (ECTS system), 7.5 (Dutch system) or equivalent
