In the Economics programme from the University of Groningen you will learn to assess different strategies to handle diverse microeconomic and macroeconomic problems.


The objective of the Economics programme from the University of Groningen is to teach you economic theories at a high analytical level. An additional goal is to familiarise you with the application of theory and research methods to economic practice and policy. Such a combination of rigorous academic thinking with practical application is essential for any professional active in the field of economics, either in policy or research. You will learn about the influence of economic factors on society and how economic theory can be applied to interpret and analyse economic problems.  

We offer two tracks: " Microeconomics of Markets and Incentives” and “Macroeconomic Theory and Policy”. Alternatively, you can specialize in Health or in Energy Economics. It is also possible to design your own study programme. The programme is truly international, being taught entirely in English. The best international textbooks are used In the various courses, students study papers published in prominent academic journals in order to keep up with the latest developments. Courses are taught by specialists with an international reputation in their field of research and/or a key role in public debates.

Job prospects

As a graduate you are able to apply advanced economic theory so as to analyse economic issues related to society at large. The programme trains you for positions in which you contribute as an economist to decision-making in (inter)national government bodies, public organisations and private corporations such as financial institutions, multinationals and consultancy firms. You can work as researcher in business or governmental agencies. You can also use your expertise for journalistic goals.

                                                                                            The GMAT - or Graduate Management Admission Test - is a frequent requirement for admission at management and business schools across the world. The GMAT score ranges between 200 and 800 and measures the verbal and quantitative reasoning of test-takers. Read more about the GMAT.

                                                                                            The GRE® General Test is a widely administered admissions test that measures the skills needed in today's graduate and business school programs worldwide. The GRE® General Test contains three sections - Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Three scores are reported: a Verbal Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, a Quantitative Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, and an Analytical Writing score on a 0 - 6 score scale in half-point increments.

                                                                                          To be eligible for admission to this Master, you need to hold an academic Bachelor's or Master's degree from a research university in one of the following - or closely related - fields: Economics and Business Economics, Econometrics and Operations Research.

                                                                                          To assess whether your educational/academic background meets the specific programme requirements, the admission committee will take account of level of knowledge in microeconomics, macroeconomics, mathematics and statistics, GPA, and motivation.
