The American Studies programme is offered by the University of Groningen.

Based on your interests, you will select a specialization among the Cultural-historical, Socio-political, or Media program tracks. Your program will culminate in a Master's Dissertation exploring a relevant American Studies topic of your choice.

You can enhance your academic experience by studying abroad or interning in North or South America. Upon graduation, your subject-matter expertise combined with your research and proficient English skills will set you apart in your future career.

Programme Structure

In the one-year American Studies Master's program, you can choose from a number of specialization courses.

Additionally, during the second semester of the graduate program, students may have an opportunity to pursue a cross-cultural experience by either doing an internship in the U.S. or studying abroad for a semester at one of our exchange partner universities in the United States.

The program will culminate in a Master's Dissertation focused on a topic within American Studies in relation to its cultural, historical, political, legal, or literary contexts.

Academic Requirements

Previous education:

  • To determine whether your academic qualifications meet the MA degree programme requirements, we will assess the curriculum and level of your first degree, and the grades that you were awarded. This evaluation is carried out by the Admissions Office of the School of Arts and Humanities and the Department's Admissions Board (which has the final say about eligibility).
English Language Requirements:
  • Minimum language requirement of TOEFL iBT 100 (with a minimum of 25 on writing skills) or IELTS 7 (with a minimum of 6.5 on all items). ERK level C1.
