The Master of Economics (MEcon) programme aims to introduce students to frontier developments in economics and to equip them with state-of-the-art analytical tools. It emphasises real-world relevance and applications. The discipline of economics has been developing rapidly in recent decades and has produced useful ideas and revealing empirical findings.

About

All these are important in economic and social-policy design and evaluation, business decision-making and our understanding of economic behaviour in general. However, because of their technical nature, these latest advances are not easily accessible to laymen.

The programme bridges the gap between technicality and applicability. It is most suitable for those who plan to pursue a career in which economic analytical skills play an important role.

Programme Structure

Students must read a total of ten courses, including the completion of three core courses (on microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics) and a capstone course. They can choose to concentrate in one of the streams: Data Analysis Stream, Policy Stream or Theory Stream, according to their interests and career aspirations.

Funding

The University administers a multitude of scholarships and prizes which are awarded primarily on the basis of academic merits at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Most of these scholarships are by faculty/departmental nominations while some are open for applications and on a competitive basis.

Government Grants and Loans
Students admitted to an exclusively UGC-funded full-time curriculum needing financial assistance for their studies at the University are strongly encouraged to apply for the Tertiary Student Finance Scheme (TSFS) which is a means-tested grant and loan scheme administered by the Student Financial Assistance Agency (SFAA) of the Hong Kong SAR Government. To qualify for assistance they must have the right of abode in Hong Kong or have resided in Hong Kong continuously for three years prior to the admission to the University (this does not cover students studying in Hong Kong on a student visa). The application form can be downloaded from the SFAA website at http://www.sfaa.gov.hk.
University Financial Assistance
University funds are in general used to supplement government grants and loans. A limited number of bursaries and loans are available primarily to local students who are in financial need. However, these are of limited value and should not be seen as an alternative to Government support. Applications are invited in early September each year. Emergency assistance is also available anytime during the year. Please visit the CEDARS website on financial assistance at http://cedars.hku.hk/cedars/finances.aspx. for details.

StudyPortals Tip: Students can search online for independent or external scholarships that can help fund their studies. Check the scholarships to see whether you are eligible to apply. Many scholarships are either merit-based or needs-based.
