The Master of Public Administration is designed to develop public affairs professionals who understand the increasingly complex issues shaping local and national policies, and who have the analytical and managerial skills to apply their knowledge to real world situations. 


Students and faculty in the MPA program focus on local and national projects in a global context, drawing on the international strengths of SIPA. Students address a variety of local and national issues, ranging from economic development in Kazakhstan, to environmental issues in Japan, to municipal bond ratings or city management in New York.

The MPA program is best suited for young professionals holding a bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of relevant work or substantive internship experience.

With an MPA degree, you’ll acquire concrete skills to work in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. You can develop a career in business, consulting, financial services, energy, and media/communications firms, as well as in development, human rights, think tanks, foundations, advocacy and environmental organizations, and federal, state, local, and foreign governments.

    The TOEFL®PBT is administered in a paper format and measures your ability to use and understand English in a classroom setting at the college or university level.     PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic) is a language test that enables students to demonstrate their writing, listening, speaking, and reading skills when applying to study in English. Delivered and marked by computer, it reports on a scale between 10 and 90.

General Requirements

    At a minimum, all applicants must:
      • Have a bachelor's degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution prior to enrolling at SIPA.
      • Provide valid GRE or GMAT test scores.
      • Demonstrate proficiency in the English language adequate for study at the masters level. A score of at least 100 on the TOEFL Internet-based exam, 7 on the IELTS exam, or 68 on the PTE exam is required in order for your application to be reviewed.
