Overview
During the General Music Education program at University of Oklahoma , students are introduced to music education coursework as early as their very first semester, and are engaged in a sequence of music education courses during every semester of their degree while taking the same basic sequence of courses required of all music students.
About the OU School of Music
The School of Music at the University of Oklahoma maintains its proud traditions while offering visionary programs that prepare students for an evolving and exciting future. The University of Oklahoma has been an institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music since 1931.
The OU School of Music is the only comprehensive music program in Oklahoma. We offer degrees at the Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral levels in all areas of music performance, composition, education, history and theory.
With 60+ full-time faculty members and 450 music majors, the School of Music presents over 400 performance and scholarly events each year. Our world-class music faculty is augmented by an outstanding music facility that includes four state-of-the-art performance halls and a comprehensive Fine Arts Library.

General requirements
- The master’s degree requires the equivalent of at least two semesters of satisfactory graduate work and additional work as may be prescribed for the degree;
- All coursework applied to the master’s degree must carry graduate credit;
- Master’s degree programs which require a thesis consist of at least 30 credit hours. All non-thesis master’s degree programs require at least 30 credit hours;
- Credit transferred from other institutions must meet specific criteria and is subject to certain limitations;
- Courses completed through correspondence study may not be applied to the master’s degree;
- To qualify for a graduate degree, students must achieve an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher in the degree program coursework and in all resident graduate coursework attempted
