2025 is the 100th anniversary of Quantum Mechanics, celebrated this year by the United Nations as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IQY 2025). 100 years ago, Werner Heisenberg, age 23 took a trip to the remote island of Heligoland, and while he was there had a profound scientific vision that transformed the way we look at the mechanics of the universe on the atomic scale, a vision that has transformed our world in formerly unimaginable ways.

Yet the quantum revolution that started 100 years ago is barely at half-time. Our understanding of the quantum world we live in is manifestly incomplete, and this incompleteness, combined with the radical new technologies that the quantum has fostered, makes it clear that we are at a time of incredible prospect: this is the time of the second quantum revolution.

Key facts

The Quantum Science course offered by Rutgers University immerses students in innovative topics ranging from theoretical issues – such as quantum error correction and strongly correlated quantum matter – giving you experience working on quantum circuits and simulators on a variety of quantum computing platforms, thereby immersing students in both theoretical concepts and experimental techniques.

Moreover, to ensure that our graduates are well-prepared for the rigors of the quantum workplace, the programme makes summer internships available through strategic partnerships with key players in the quantum industry.
